VAWA is an ARRL-affiliated,
regional, Special Service amateur radio club in Virginia whose
membership
extends from Wytheville to Lynchburg; Roanoke to Giles
County.
VAWA is interested in helping individuals to develop themselves to
become amateur radio operators. Anyone who is interested in
actively participating in an ARRL
Club is welcome to apply for
membership. Our activities include Field Day, DXing, rag-chewing,
and
antenna-raisings. We support and promote ARRL's Amateur Radio Emergency Service and certificate award programs like "Worked
All States"
and "DX-CC" (contacted 100 or more foreign countries) as well as the National
Traffic
System .
The Virginia Appalachian
Wireless
Association, in coordination with William Byrd High School, Vinton,
Virginia,
submitted a grant proposal to the American Radio Relay League Education
and
Technology Program to establish a pilot project linking amateur radio
and
the school curriculum. The American Radio Relay League has
awarded
18 grants to pilot projects nationally. VAWA and WBHS are the
proud recipients of one of those 18 awards.
VAWA is also currently running ARRL Test Sessions at Wytheville Community College, Wytheville, VA. Check our events page for more details and scheduling.
